The Power of the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:8 says,

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth."

These words were some of the last words spoken by Jesus. We often listen closely to the last words of a person, and in this case we again listen closely to what Jesus said.

Genesis 1:1 says,
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters." (WEB)

Who is the Holy Spirit?

- He is the Person of God Himself
- He is the One who created heaven and earth
- He is not just the "active force" of God, but He is the very Person of God, and is often described as God in action
- He is Christ in us (Colosssians 1:27)

Matthew 3:11 says,
"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (NKJV)

The Greek word for "and" means "even the". This means that Jesus would baptize us in the Holy Spirit, "even the" fire. The Holy Spirit is the fire, and the fire is the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4 shows us what it was like when the first disciples were baptized in the Holy Spirit:

"Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.  Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak"

We should trust and believe God for this kind of experience!

What is the main thing Jesus said will happen when the Holy Spirit comes upon us?
The answer is POWER.

What do we need the POWER for?

- Power to LIVE

Zechariah 4:6 says, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says Yahweh of Hosts" (WEB)
2 Timothy 1:7 says, "7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind"

- Power to be a WITNESS
